For agents searching for life insurance leads, this survey can provide valuable data and reports reflecting present market conditions that reinforce the need of consumers for life insurance. It?s still a big market with only one-fourth of policyholders actually taking the time to study their coverage.

Prudential?s chief marketing officer for Individual Life Insurance business, Mark Hug, notes that last year?s market collapse led everyone to reassess their needs, and to pare down their spending habits. People are aware that life insurance fills broader needs than merely a death benefit.

More survey details show that 67% of consumers observed that the current ups and downs of the market remind them of the importance of life insurance coverage. This is good information that an agent can use to track new life insurance leads.

Only one fourth (24%) of consumers took the time to study their coverage and even less had their policies changed. This is another piece of good news for agents looking for new life leads.

Compared to 18 months ago, about half of those surveyed are less confident that stocks, bonds, home equity, and other financial vehicles they may have will be enough for their retirement goals, offer a comfortable safety cushion, or outpace inflation.

Lastly, 78% surveyed are more, or equally, confident that their life insurance proceeds will be available to protect their loved ones.

Hug adds that concerns about unemployment are having an impact also.

About 67% of those consumers surveyed realize that they need more coverage than that offered by employers. In addition, 55% have twice their annual income, or even less aside from the coverage they get at work.

Knowing the mood of consumers will help agents as they search for life insurance leads.

1,000 Americans were polled regarding the effects of the economic downturn and their knowledge about life insurance, their attitudes, ownership and the actions they have taken. Margin of error is plus or minus 3% at a confidence level of 95%. Participants surveyed are from a national sample of male and female heads of households (sole/joint) between ages 30 to 59, with a household income of $50,000 or more in 2008, and have savings and investments of at least $25,000.
