A nationwide study conducted by the American Cancer Society found that uninsured individuals and people under Medicaid coverage are more likely to get a cancer diagnosis in the late stages, than people that have private insurance. This often results in getting smaller chances to survive the disease.

Another finding is that African Americans run a bigger risk of being diagnosed late, even if they took into account that they represent a disproportionately large number of those that are uninsured and underinsured among the general population.

The study?s authors explain the disparity can be due to a lack of literacy on health concerns and the inadequate number of minority community providers.

Previous studies report a correlation between some cancers? stage of diagnosis and insurance status. The new research covered 3.7 million patients that were given diagnoses from 1998 to 2004, a six-year period.

The biggest disparities were found on cancers that can be diagnosed early through standard screening or an assessment of symptoms.

These types of cancers include colon cancer, breast, lung, and melanoma. Patients who are uninsured have a greater probability of being diagnosed in Stage III or Stage IV than at Stage I. The ratio is between two to three times more likely. Cancers that were found to have smaller disparities are non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma, kidney, bladder, prostate, uterus, thyroid, pancreas, and ovarian cancer.

The authors concluded people that are not getting optimum care with regard to timely cancer screening and diagnosis are those without private insurance. They usually receive a lesser number of follow-ups from health care providers. The authors also added that being diagnosed in the late stages leads to a decreased quality of life, less chances of survival, increased morbidity, most likely result in increased costs.

Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society said evidence exists that suffering increases if an individual does not have insurance.

Some cancer researchers do not subscribe to the notion that the best answer to this situation is early detection through universal, comprehensive screening. They contend that some cancers, prostate cancer and melanoma for example, can be misdiagnosed and over diagnosed. And thus may lead doctors to identify and treat tumors that may not actually develop into serious problems. In some cases, drug therapies and surgery may actually result in shortening a person?s lifetime.
